STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a), (b), (c) and (d) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.* 233 REGARDING “DRINKING WATER SCHEME FOR WILDLIFE” BY SHRI RAKESH SINGH, SHRI B. SRIRAMULU DUE FOR REPLY ON 10.05.2016:

(a) &(b) Management of National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries and Tiger Reserves lies with the respective State Governments. The Central Government provides financial assistance to the States/Union Territory Governments under the Centrally Sponsored Schemes of ''Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats'', ''Project Tiger'' and ’Project Elephant'', for the management of protected areas. Various activities are undertaken by State Governments for creation of water harvesting/retention structures like bunds, tanks, check dams, well, ponds, water holes etc. to ensure drinking water availability for the wild animals.

In addition to this, Ministry with financial assistance from Ad-hoc Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), has formulated a scheme to provide assistance to the States for ‘Augmentation of Fodder and Water in Protected areas/Forest Areas’, aimed at improving habitat in protected areas by making provision for augmenting grass, fodder and water to the wild animals. The scheme has been sent to all the State Forest Departments.

(c) Ministry has not received any reports of death of wild animals due to thirst/lack of drinking water in protected areas.
(d) Does not arise.
