Warship under Make in India

(a) whether the Government has taken any initiative in construction of warship under the “ Make in India”;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c)whether the Government is contemplating any measures to improve major technologies and capabilities that our public and private sector industry may focus on to meet the Indian Navy’s requirements; and
(d) if so, the steps taken/being taken by the Government in this regard so far?

Will the Minister of DEFENCE be pleased to state:-

(a) whether the Government has taken any initiative in construction of warship under the “ Make in India”;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c)whether the Government is contemplating any measures to improve major technologies and capabilities that our public and private sector industry may focus on to meet the Indian Navy’s requirements; and

(d) if so, the steps taken/being taken by the Government in this regard so far?

ANSWER

MINISTER OF DEFENCE (SHRI RAJNATH SINGH)


(a) Yes Sir.

(b) (i) Major shipbuilding projects in respect to Indigenous Aircraft Carrier, Frigates, Submarines, Destroyers, Corvettes, Naval Offshore Patrol Vessels etc., are at various stages of execution at different Indian shipyards.
(ii) The Navy designs most of its weapon intensive warships in-house and gets them built indigenously at Indian Shipyards. The Indian Navy has in-house capability to design complex frontline combatants like Corvettes, Stealth Frigates, Destroyers and Aircraft Carriers.

(c) & (d): Yes Sir. Several measures have been taken by Government to meet Indian Navy’s requirements. Some of them are as follows:-

1. Strengthening infrastructure of DPSU shipyards.

2. Adoption of modular construction technologies to bring down construction period of warships.

3. Policy intervention for participation of private shipyards in Naval projects.

4. Policy intervention for promoting indigenisation of imported equipment for warships.

5. Promoting Artificial Intelligence in warship construction activities.
